Despite Maximilian Davis’s Ferragamo winning the British Womenswear Designer of The Year at the 2023 Fashion Awards, I feel like he is somehow still an unsung hero of the fashion world. Part of his genius includes the design of the below evening bag, called “minaudière with long fringing,” although it feels like a caricature of one due to its sheer overblown size. I fell in love seeing this on body (I think RHW wore this?), with the dramatics of the silk tassel dragging on the floor even when thrown over the shoulder. I went to see it for myself at the NYC store, and while I did not take it home at its ~$8,000 price point, it remains on my “Grails” list, and I can only hope to find one in a vintage shop some day.
Having an (already extensively mentioned) obsession with tassels, I was led to this darling Rafael Sanchez score from Poshmark back in November and have started a new love affair for the minaudière.
Defined as “a small, decorative case for women’s accessories that's often carried as a clutch” and accredited to Charles Arpels of Van Cleef & Arpels, I’ve found that the simple search term alone is enough to find some of the best vintage evening bags on the market. Below are some of my favorites!
